Cardian Matsu Lux has spent the last while mostly honing her loop compositions and chopping techniques with her work (most notably on Prism and Blue Eyeshadow), so “fashion pop” really feels like a synthesis of that exploration, now with a wholly realized theme.

The sample choices here are perfect, they really represent that sort of runway/model culture that proliferated magazines and television at the time, exuberant and flashy.

We’re at about ten years of this and her ideas are still just as fresh. Favorite track: last summer.

An artist long associated with the internet music scene that was birthed during the early 2010s microgenre movement, luxury elite has been curating and producing some of the most iconic music to come out of Vaporwave since it's early years. Returning to the scene after a hiatus in the late 2010s, luxury elite has continued to not only produce more widely lauded albums on labels like Doom Trip Records but has also been a cheerleader for the growth and evolution of the genre as a whole. Her latest album "fashion pop" takes the aesthetics and techniques of the subgenre she pioneered, late night lo-fi, and upgrades the sonics to a new level of plunderphonic mastery.

Powerful drums, exquisitely sliced loops, and an unmatched fidelity are present on her latest album, which chops and weaves the sounds of italo-disco and synth pop into new compositions. At moments you can hear snippets of the familiar ("mall fountains") but the clean production reinvents these plundered bits of aural nostalgia into fresh new songs. There are even moments of new age bliss ("morris ital"), motivational get-ups ("design office") and mellow meditation ("hbo intermission") among the album’s sixteen tracks. The sonic palette is familiar to fans of her previous work- however, "fashion pop" brings a more hi-fi sensibility that reveals luxury elite's evolution as a producer and musician.

The new album conjures up images of elegance and early 90s nostalgia alongside familiar themes of nightlife, fashion and high society. luxury elite builds a sonic world for listeners to inhabit and escape their own contemporary lives. The music not only transports listeners to a different time, as vaporwave is wont to do, but gives the listeners a chance to transcend their own bodies- melting into the air and atmosphere of tracks like "monochromatic fantasy" and "smooth character". Some songs directly reference places, especially places of imagined nightlife ("crowded bar", "dancefloor melodrama") as well as physical places ("fashion district", "toward snoqualmie"). The carefully selected loops and samples give each song its own timbre, evoking different moods through the album’s journey.

With her continued foray into live performances (such as Electronicon 2023 and Flamingo Fest) and vaporwave curation (on her bi-monthly YouTube-based radio show Neon Nights), it seems like things are only continuing to progress for this stalwart of the internet music community. The string of albums over the past few years has cemented her reputation as a producer par-excellence, helping to disabuse the notion that vaporwave is just some micro-trend or a dead genre. On "fashion pop", luxury elite puts forward a masterful work that shows the evolution of her style and her ability to take the listeners to a nostalgic, and perhaps utopian, place in our collective memory- giving us the chance to escape the mundane and float into the past.

yes, it's different. but: luxury elite again proves that some vaporwave artists aren't just copy cats using slow-downed music. prism is a good example for (almost?) sample-free compositions and she's done it the professional way. however, personally I prefer the classic vapor – sorry for that.
