On assignment back to 1997, Darien Shields returns to Pacific Plaza Records with his new album Platinum Phantom – a crash-course in sample hunting, pirated soundscapes, and Vapor-pop romps. Harkening back to the origins of chillwave and early vaporwave, Darien Shields not only recontextualizes samples but also adds his own lyrics and sonic bricolage to his catchy pop-flavored compositions. It’s a time-warp ticket back to the 90s, complete with retro sounds, nostalgic irony and the rarified scent of magnetic tape.

Darien Shields is the project of Pacific Northwest producer Eric Gordon- the mastermind behind the cloying identity derived from the iconic Sailor Moon series. Since 2017, he has released a string of albums taking inspiration, and sampling media, from the years 1991 to 1997. His most recent album, Platinum Phantom, refines his approach to creating idiosyncratic pop songs and instrumental sonic worlds, combining a wide array of samples plundered from sources like VHS tapes and cultural artifacts of the 90s with layers of MIDI, one-shots and ambient field recordings. The aesthetics of vaporwave, lo-fi bedroom pop and synth pop come together on this bricolage of pop songs and cultural homage to the year 1997.
