The split album is a time honored tradition in the vaporwave scene- originally used as a vehicle for artists to share their curatorial minds and contribute their individual interpretations of classic vaporwave symbolism/sounds. ミスト M Y S T & Sev we're brought together by the vaporwave scene, despite being from complete separate and culturally distinct parts of the country (Houston, TX and Providence, RI respectively). Their shared love of plunderphonic funk brings them together to celebrate the connections made at the club and a nostalgic interpretation of 80s nightlife.

These two artists have a storied history, all the way back to ミスト M Y S T's first release with Pacific Plaza Records- a 2019 reissue + remix compilation of his album "赤毛" (Bogus Collective, 2018). Sev's remix was later included on a deluxe edition of his album "River City", issued by the label Gulf Audio Company which was co-founded by ミスト M Y S T himself! The inevitable meeting of these two like-minded artists and friends has resulted in their new album "Twenty-One Plus", out on cassette through Pacific Plaza Records.

Both artists go for the jugular on this release- ripping straight into the catchiest parts of each sample and gratuitously slathering each cut with chopped'n'screwed production techniques. The influence of DJ Screw and the Houston hiphop scene is evident on hometown boy ミスト M Y S T. Sev's side finds him digging into his older production style, prior to his lauded "Zero-G" album on PPR, with healthy doses of phaser sweeps and prominent basslines that cut through the mix.

ミスト M Y S T and Sev lean into the "stutter and filter" techniques common in the vaporfunk scene, especially the producers plundering old Synth-funk, New Jack Swing and Boogie. While the two producers share some stylistic similarities, ミスト M Y S T's side is more syrupy ("Bottled Blonde") and rugged ("Rhythmic Pulsation"), with Sev's side kicking the tempo up with a more frenetic energy ("Cover Charge", "VIP"). The theme that unites these two sides is present in the track titles ("Bathroom Bumpin" ), lyrics featured in the samples, and hardcuts that keep the party going with a just a few respites ("What's Your Sign?", "Shorty Pt. 1") and romantic interjections ("Eye Contact", "So Fine").

With 26 tracks of non-stop funk, take a trip back to the nightlife of the 1980s and celebrate the human connections made at the club. We're going out with ミスト M Y S T on Friday and Sev has got Saturday covered on their split album: "Twenty-One Plus".
